71 Years of the Karmann Ghia: Italian sports car design built by Karmann in Osnabrück – that was the magic formula for one of the most beautiful cars of the 1950s: the Karmann Ghia. Designer Luigi Segre (owner of the Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Ghia S.p.A. Karmann, and Volkswagen made automotive history with the coupé unveiled at the 1955 IAA in Frankfurt. Over 440,000 units were produced until 1974. The VW Karmann Ghia earned the nickname "Housewife's Porsche" because it was a particularly popular sports car with women.(1955–1974)
